The Scottish Quaich (from the Gaelic word "Cuach" meaning shallow cup) is traditionally used when offering a guest "the cup of welcome" and again when offering the farewell drink - most usually a dram of whisky!  Quaichs were originally made of wood - silver quaichs were first introduced in the 17th century.
