In bygone days when folk were more superstitious, it was thought that you should cross a baby's hand with silver to bring it luck and to ensure that the fairies thought well of you. A Scottish baby on its first outing will receive silver coins from complete strangers. The ancient pattern of intertwined hearts-the Luckenbooth Pattern - was the inspiration for the design of this spoon, which is a modern version of the old Scots Baptismal Spoon, which was used to pour Holy oil on the infant's head, to save it from evil spirits and to ensure a good start in life.
