Tea was originally an expensive commodity, found only on the tables of those
able to afford such imported luxuries. It was carefully stored in a “caddy” and
measured out with a spoon which was always kept with the tea. The word caddy
comes from the Malay word “khati”- a measure of tea sold by weight.
